These two French poems about school are great as a starter on the school/education topic with KS4 students.

The poems are 'Le dessin' by Gilbert Delehède for Foundation tier students and 'Dans mon cartable' by Pierre Ruaud for Higher tier. The resource links to online versions of the poems for students to read and/or listen to.

The Foundation tier worksheet contains comprehension questions in English and questions about grammar structures, including past tense verbs, gender agreement and irregular past participles. The Higher tier worksheet involves completing a gapped translation of the poem and translating some simple past tense phrases.

An extract from the Foundation tier questions:

Answer the grammar questions in English.

  1. How many past tense verbs are there in the poem? Make a list.

  2. Is the word cahier masculine or feminine? How can you tell? (2)
